STAND-UP Mundelein Launches New Underage Drinking Campaign Aimed at Parents

Education alone is not enough to deter teens from drinking as they enter the difficult social transition to adulthood because there are many pressures and opportunities to drink. Research, however, shows parents can have a powerful influence on their child's decision to remain drug-free.

Mundelein STAND-UP is committed to the prevention of underage drinking and drug use. The group’s most recent campaign emphasizes the essential role parents play in their children’s lives.

Parents may not realize the impact they have on their children’s decision-making. Yet STAND-UP Mundelein’s research indicates that children say parental disapproval of underage drinking and other drug use is the KEY reason they have chosen not to use alcohol. Mixed messages coupled with unclear family rules and expectations also leave children more vulnerable to underage drinking.

Mundelein STAND-UP is comprised of local community partners united by their passion and dedication to the prevention of underage drinking and drug use. The group’s primary goals are to reduce the use of alcohol and marijuana use by youth in the community.

Community partners include concerned parents, students, public health, health care workers, law enforcement, social service professionals, community leaders, elected officials, educators, business owners, volunteers and local citizens who seek a safe community for children and families to live and grow. Mundelein STAND-UP works collaboratively with many partners to open discussions, educate, initiate police change and mobilize resources.

STAND-UP welcomes new members. The group meets every second Thursday of each month from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Mundelein Police Station—221 North Lake Street in Mundelein.
