Public Works and Engineering Recognized as Top Ten “Tech Innovator”

Mundelein Public Works and Engineering is a finalist in Route Fifty’s Tech Innovator 2018 Navigator Award—one of ten national organizations to be credited for leading the way in technological advancements that reduce cost and increase the ease with which citizens interact with government and the world around them. The team submitted their project application through Route Fifty’s Navigator national call for projects.

PW&E received the nomination for work related to energy and operational savings in the water and wastewater utility. Specific efforts in shared staffing with the Village of Libertyville and innovative wastewater treatment technologies contributed to receiving this national honor.

According to Route Fifty’s website, the Tech Innovator Navigator Award finalists include an impressive group that is “revolutionizing how communities handle everything from sewage to voting. We're excited to recognize the efforts of this impressive class of technologists.”

As a recognized technology leader in government, Mundelein PW & E is utilizing technology not only to reduce costs, but for making a difference in the community by harnessing technology for the greater good of all residents.

Public Works and Engineering Director Adam Boeche and the Water Reclamation team aggressively pursue energy efficiency and best practices in all endeavors and this recognition validates these efforts.

“We are excited to be recognized by a national organization like Route Fifty that focuses specifically on government technology and innovation. From the top down, our organization takes a lot of pride in the establishment of groundbreaking and efficient ways of providing high quality service to the businesses and residents of Mundelein. Paul Cacioppo and his team at the reclamation facility are true leaders in the water reclamation industry. It is a pleasure to work with them each and every day,” Boeche said.

According to Route 50, “It’s often difficult to find the funds to integrate next generation technology into existing infrastructure. Boeche and his team were able to use energy efficiency performance contracting, a ‘self-funding’ method that pays back a loan through the energy savings accrued. This effort has reduced the utility’s electricity cost by 39 percent since its completion, and they are not standing still. The team is exploring sewage treatment using algae, as well as disinfection methods that reduce environmental impact.”

Route Fifty is a digital news publication from Atlantic Media’s Government Executive Media Group. Route Fifty connects the people and ideas advancing state, county and municipal government across the United States. The publication promotes stories about technology and innovation at the state and local level. Route Fifty also covers a variety of topics under the larger state, county and municipal government umbrella beyond technology and innovation, including issues like management, budgeting, best practices, smart ideas, open data, open government and public services.
