Mundelein Honors Four Local Businesses with 2019 Gold Star Awards

Four Mundelein businesses have been selected for the Village of Mundelein’s 2019 Gold Star Business Award.

The 2019 Business Honorees are:

 Patterson Glass
 Gustafson’s Body Shop
 Karina’s Bakery
 Los Magueyes Mexican Grill

The Gold Star Business Awards Program, an initiative spearheaded by the Mundelein Economic Development Commission, recognizes Mundelein businesses that have made a significant contribution to the community or have achieved notable success in their industry.

Mayor Steve Lentz and Economic Development Commission Chairman Larry Gallas, recently presented awards to the businesses and thanked them for their contributions to the Village of Mundelein at a recent Board Meeting.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I congratulate all of the 2019 Gold Star Business recipients for this well-deserved recognition. The businesses honored exemplify Mundelein’s entrepreneurial and welcoming spirit. We are pleased that they choose to call Mundelein home and we wish each business continued success in all of endeavors,” said Steve Lentz, Mayor.

The Village of Mundelein proudly recognizes the following 2019 Gold Star Business award recipients:

• Patterson Glass - Peter Patterson has been creating glass art for over 40 years and his Mundelein studio has been a foundation for other arts here in town. Peter earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Art and has studied under many nationally known glass artists. Many from inside and outside of Mundelein are drawn to his hands-on classes to learn about the art of glass blowing and to purchase artwork from their studio. Patterson Glass’ dedication to art and our community is worthy of praise. For this reason we recognize Patterson Glass as an exceptional business, Peter Patterson for his determination as an entrepreneur and artist, and for the rest of the Patterson Glass team for their resounding commitment to Mundelein.

• Gustafson’s Body Shop – This automotive repair business recently became a certified repair facility for 12 major manufactures including: Acura, Chrysler, Honda, Nissan, and GM. They boast a 4.7/5.0 rating on Google Maps and a 98% customer satisfaction rating, so it’s no wonder that Gustafson has been a key member of the Mundelein business community for over 60 years. Owned by the Hoskins family since 1975 and now run by son John. They have an average staff tenure of 22 years! Gustafson’s Body Shop is receiving this award today due to their continued excellence in providing customer service as well as their contributions to the community through participation in Park on Park, Lochfest, the Police Golf Outing, and Mundelein Community Days.

• Karina’s Bakery – This family-owned and managed bakery has become a staple of the community since its founding by Rafael Herrera in 1999. After 18 years on Hawley Street the business moved its entire operation to a newly remodeled 3,700 square foot, former bank located at 401 N. Seymour Avenue in Downtown Mundelein. The new location enables their business to expand its food and drink offerings and provides a new dine-in option for its patrons. Karina’s Bakery specializes in Mexican breads and pastries, in addition to crafting custom cakes for special events. The relocation was certainly an expensive endeavor, but Karina was able to secure some of the funds through the Village’s Business Incentive Grant (BIG) Program. Their significant commitment to business expansion is one of the reasons why Karina’s Bakery has been selected as a Gold Star Award Winner.

• Los Magueyes Mexican Grill - Newer restaurant at Lake Plaza specializing in Mexican seafood dishes. Responsible for coordinating the Celebrando Nuestras Fiestas Patrias festival at Lake Plaza on September 14, 15, and 16. The festival was a huge celebration with music, food, beer, and family entertainment held at Lake Plaza. The event was a great success and we all hope to see it or similar events come back to Mundelein in the future. Los Magueyes’ dedication to the community and willingness to be a leader in civic engagement is the reason why they are a Gold Star Award Winner.

“We gratefully acknowledge all of our Mundelein businesses for being a part of our community. The Gold Star Award recipients are models for success and we look forward to their continued success and we hope they are an inspiration to other Mundelein businesses in the year ahead,” Mayor Lentz concluded.
