MPD to Host Annual Eco-Friendly Pumpkin Drop

Go green after Halloween by composting your past-it’s-prime Jack O’ Lantern at the Mundelein Park District’s FREE PUMPKIN DROP on Sunday, November 4 from 12:30 to 1:30 pm. Held at Keith Mione Community Park (1401 N. Midlothian Road, Mundelein), this event is for all ages and includes games, pumpkin launching and when all the fun is over, participants can drop off their pumpkins at the community-wide composting site.

A dumpster will be available for pumpkin drop-off (pumpkins only, no candles or added decorations) during the hours of 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. near the sled hill at Community Park (1401 N. Midlothian Road, Mundelein) regardless of weather conditions.

The event will feature the traditional pumpkin rolling races down the sled hill and smashing
pumpkin activities. “Big Red,” the trebuchet/catapult designed and built by Mundelein High School students, is back to launch 20 lucky winning pumpkins selected from pre-registered participants. It will send the pumpkins soaring into the sky and smash upon their landing. The distance will be measured and the winner will receive a special prize!

Also, composting specialist Vytas Pabedinskas will be educating participants on the science behind composting and the benefits of diverting those past their prime pumpkins from the trash. At the conclusion of the Pumpkin Drop and community-wide pumpkin composting event, all pulverized pumpkin remains will be taken to a composting facility.

Special thanks to the Pumpkin Drop Partners: Joel Fiorelli State Farm Insurance Agency and Integral Orthodontics for helping to make this fun event possible.
Children must be pre-registered by October 26 at www.mundeleinparks.org/pumpkindrop. For a chance to have their pumpkin launched by Big Red. Pre-registration is encouraged and only pumpkins from the 20 selected will be launched. Please remove all materials from inside your pumpkin. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Immediately following the pumpkin drop, join the MPD staff and fellow residents, for a free GO MUNDELEIN walk. The group will meet at 2 p.m. at Cambridge Country Park (1200 Regent Drive), take a brisk walk and talk about safe walking tips during the coming winter months. GO MUNDELEIN is a walking initiative that promotes healthy and active living through programing and events. It encourages everyone to make a commitment to walk for 30 minutes every day. Mundelein Park District organizes monthly free walks to help meet this commitment.
