Important Reminder—Open Burning NOT Allowed in Mundelein

It has come to the attention of the Village of Mundelein that there is open burning taking place in a few neighborhoods. According to Mundelein Municipal Code Chapter 15.04, this practice is prohibited.

Please take note of a few highlights on this issue as outlined in the Municipal Code:
-No person shall cause or allow within the boundaries of the village open burning of landscape waste as defined to include leaves, trees, tree trimmings, branches, stumps, brush, weeds, grass, shrubbery and yard trimmings.
-No person shall cause or allow the burning of any refuse in any chamber or apparatus.
-No person shall cause or allow within the boundary of the village any outside burning of any unharvested groundcover vegetation.

Residents who observe any open burning within the Village of Mundelein limits, are asked to please call the Mundelein Police Department’s non-emergency number: 847-968-4600 to alert the MPD so that an officer can speak with the neighbor who is in burning items. This will allow us to observe if they are properly abiding by the ordinance.

What can be burned and Fire Pit Regulations? (Chapter 15.04.030(3))

Recreational fires, as defined in Section F301.2.1 of the Village of Mundelein Fire Prevention Code, are permitted open burning, provided: (a) such recreational fires are wood fires burned in metal, or porcelain finished metal, portable outdoor fireplace structures manufactured by a qualified manufacturing firm; (b) the manufacturer's recommendations for proper placement and operation of the fireplace are followed; and (c) such fireplaces are not operated within the front yard setback;

Examples consist of but are not limited to as follows:
1. Seasoned fire wood. (Wood that has been cut into logs and has had one year to dry out)
2. A log is a piece of wood that is 2 inches in diameter or bigger
3. A small amount of paper or small stick for ignition only. No Gas

What cannot be burned? (Chapter 15.04.020)
-No person shall cause or allow within the boundaries of the Village open burning of landscape waste as defined to include leaves, trees, tree trimmings, branches, stumps, brush, weeds, grass, shrubbery and yard trimmings.
-No person shall cause or allow the burning of any refuse in any chamber or apparatus.
-No person shall cause or allow within the bounty of the Village any outside burning of any unharvested groundcover vegetation.

Other
o The fire must be contained in the fire pit.
o No excessive smoke is allowed.
o Must have access to a garden hose or other means of extinguishment
o Can’t be located under any low hanging branches
o Can’t be located under any power lines
o Those in violation can be fined up to $750.00 for violations of this ordinance.
