Arbor Day Foundation Names Mundelein Tree City USA Growth Award Winner

For the sixth consecutive year, the Village of Mundelein has been named a 2018 Tree City USA municipality by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The community also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating environmental improvement and higher level of tree care.

Mundelein achieved the Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program's four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

“On behalf of the Arbor Day Foundation, I write to congratulate Mundelein on earning recognition as a 2018 Tree City USA and for receiving a Growth Award. Residents of Mundelein should be proud to live in a community that makes the planting and care of trees a priority,” said Dan Lambe, President, Arbor Day Foundation.

Mundelein is one of more than 3,500 Tree City USAs, with a combined population of 150 million. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

“Tree City USA communities see first-hand the impact an urban forest has on a community,” Lambe explained. “Additionally, recognition brings residents together and creates a sense of community pride, whether it's through volunteer engagement or public education."

Trees provide multiple benefits to a community when properly planted and maintained. They help to improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants and provide wildlife habitat, among many other benefits.

About the Arbor Day Foundation: The Arbor Day Foundation is a million member nonprofit conservation and education organization with the mission to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. More information can be found at arborday.org.
