Grand Illinois Trail

The Illinois Grand Bike Trail is a trail that was created in the 1990s to connect a network of various bike trails. The trail traverses the entire width of the nortern part of the state. From Mundelein, a biker traveling east could go all the way to Lake Shore Drive and Navy Pier. Going West, a biker could travel to the Quad Cities and other Mississippi towns.

Fertilizer Restrictions

Phosphorus Fertilizer Ordinance

In a united effort to protect Mundelein’s water quality and the environment in area lakes and streams, the Mundelein Board of Trustees voted to pass an ordinance regulating the use of fertilizers containing phosphorous within Mundelein at the September 14, 2015 Village Board meeting. Under the new ordinance, any fertilizer—whether liquid, granular, or solid—may not contain any amount of phosphorous or other compound containing phosphorous except the naturally occurring phosphorous in natural or organic fertilizing products such as yard waste or compost. The ordinance also stipulates that fertilizer cannot be applied to impervious surfaces, areas within drainage ditches, waterways or within 20 feet thereof, or any delineated wetland.

The term “fertilizer” applies to any substance containing nitrogen, phosphorous, or potassium or any other recognized plant nutrient or compound which is used for it plant nutrient content. Fertilizer does not include the following natural products: agricultural limestone, sea solids, or unprocessed manure. Under the new ordinance banning phosphorous use in fertilizers, a few exemptions apply. Specifically, lawn repair products and turf and lawn areas for which soil tests confirm that the phosphorous content is below the median phosphorous levels for typical area soils.

The prohibited use of fertilizers containing phosphorous also does not apply to flower beds and vegetable gardens and establishing newly seeded, sodded, sprigged or plugged turf/lawn areas. Further, golf courses and any farming or agricultural business are exempt from this ban provided the use of fertilizers is related to the growth of a product or maintenance of growing fields. However the ordinance specifies that appropriate steps must be taken to integrate the fertilizer into the soil where it is immobilized and generally protected from loss by storm water runoff.

While Mundelein businesses and residents are still permitted to sell fertilizers containing phosphorus if they choose to do so, to adhere to the regulations outlined in the new ordinance, they are required to post signs with the following message:

Garage Sale Basics

The Village of Mundelein has an exclusive residential solid waste collection and recycling agreement with Groot Industries, Inc. for all single family residences and duplexes.

Under this agreement, residents are provided a 95-gallon cart for garbage collection and a 65-gallon cart for recycling. Garbage, landscape waste and recycling will be picked up once a week. Landscape waste is collected from April 1 to November 30.

While electronic materials are not permitted in landfills, Groot now collects electronic waste at the curb at no additional charge. Residents wishing to recycle such items should call Groot to schedule a date and time for collection.

Different trucks collect the three types of materials—garbage, landscape waste, and recyclables. The solid waste contract provides five collection options: unlimited collection, limited collection, senior unlimited collection, senior limited collection, or pay by the bag collection. The details of each option are noted below. Refuse and recycling carts should be placed four feet apart at the curbside to facilitate automatic collection. Automatic collection allows faster service, which helps to keep collection costs down. Loose material in excess of one cubic yard will not be collected until the customer is provided a cost estimate from Groot.

Residents may choose from the following garbage collection service options:

  • Unlimited Standard Refuse Service ($22.47/month): Unlimited collection includes weekly collection of garbage in a 95 gallon cart, plus loose items less than 1 cubic yard and 1 bulk item not over 50 lbs, and weekly collection of Recyclable Materials in a 65-gallon cart weekly collection of Recyclable Materials in a 65-gallon cart.
  • Limited Refuse Service ($18.47/month): This option enables customers to choose a 65-gallon garbage container instead of a 95-gallon container. The program includes one bulk item (50 pound maximum) per week for collection and weekly collection of recyclable materials in a 65-gallon or 95 gallon cart included in the price. To select the larger recycling cart, free of charge, call Groot Industries at 800-244-1977. If you choose to return to the small recycling cart and return the large garbage cart there will be a $25.00 service charge applied.
  • Senior Unlimited Service ($20.23/month): Residents 65 and older, including age-restricted communities, are eligible for two 35-gallon carts for municipal waste and recyclables. Seniors not in an age-restricted community must be registered as a senior in the Village water billing system. Bulk items will be collected for an additional charge.
  • Senior Limited Program ($16.63/month): This option lets senior customers choose a 35-gallon cart for refuse only and does not allow for bulk item collection. Additional refuse found outside the cart will require one prepaid refuse sticker to be affixed to each container or bag not to exceed 33 gallons
  • Pay-Per-Bag with Recycling ($2.65 per tag, $7.85/month for recycling): Residents only pay for monthly recycling, and one tag would be required for each container of waste. Containers must be in plastic bags up to 33 gallon capacity or metal/plastic cans up to 33 gallon capacity and not over 50 pounds. Bulk items will be collected for an additional charge.

To choose any of these programs, contact Groot Industries at 800-244-1977. For more comprehensive garbage and recycling information, please click here.

As the weather gets warmer every year, inevitably, mosquitoes come out and join us for some summer fun. To help combat these pesky bugs the Village contracts with Clarke Environmental, Inc. for mosquito control. Much of the control activity is focused on "pre-hatch" treatment, killing the mosquito larvae before they hatch. These activities include treating wetlands breeding areas, using public and private catch basin applications, relocating mosquito fish, and monitoring mosquito levels.

In the event that breeding conditions overwhelm the treatment controls, the Village may order a Village-wide ULV spraying to control and the adult mosquito population. If you would like to be notified in advance of a scheduled ULV treatment, or would like to have the spray turned off in front of your house, please call the Clarke Mosquito Hotline. If you think you may have a mosquito breeding area on your property, please contact the hotline at 1-800-942-2555.

The Mundelein Police Department has a limited number of wildlife traps that are available to residents of the Village for nuisance animals such as raccoons, opossums, and skunks. If residents wishes to rent a trap, they can call the Mundelein Police Department’s non-emergency number for assistance. After speaking with a Police Department representative about obtaining a trap and being approved, they can come into the station at their convenience to sign for the trap (acknowledging that they are taking the trap home). A representative at the Police Department will show residents how to, not only set up the trap if needed, but also provided them with a sheet as to the bait that will catch the nuisance animal they are having a problem with.

After residents set up the trap and catch an animal, they may call the Police Department’s non-emergency number again to notify dispatch that they have an animal in the trap and the Village’s Community Service Officers will be dispatched to their house to assist them. Officers will take care of the animal and then return the trap to them for further use. At the end of the seven-day rental period, the trap must be returned to the Mundelein Police Department in good working condition and rinsed out of any left-over bait/feces to avoid fees. There is usually is a waiting list during the fall, summer and spring periods due to the high number of requests and only a limited number of traps available.

If you have any other questions, please contact the Mundelein Police Department through their non-emergency number at (847) 968-4600.

The Village of Mundelein frequently receives questions regarding persons going door-to-door and soliciting. Please review the following FAQ's regarding door-to-door solicitors:

Does the Village regulate door-to-door solicitors?
Yes. Solicitors within the Village of Mundelein must first apply for and be approved for a Solicitor ID to solicit within the Village. Solicitors must also adhere to specific guidelines and rules regulating door-to-door solicitation.

Do solicitors need to identify themselves?
Yes. All approved solicitors in the Village of Mundelein receive a Solicitor ID which includes photo identification. All solicitors approved by the Village should be able to provide their Solicitor ID when asked. If they are unable to provide this identification, do not hesitate to call the Mundelein Police Department at 847-968-4600 to report them.

Why can't the Village ban door-to-door solicitors?
The First Amendment and the U.S. Constitution protect the rights of door-to-door solicitors and preclude the ability of a community to ban door-to-door sales. The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld free speech for commercial purposes and the Village's ability to restrict commercial door-to-door solicitation is limited to local regulations restricting the time, place and manner of door-to-door solicitations. Homeowners and occupants, however, do have the ultimate right to determine whether solicitors shall or shall not be invited to their residences or property.

Where can I find a "no solicitors" sign?
The Village of Mundelein will provide free pre-printed "no solicitor" signs to residents. For more information about these signs and how to obtain them, please click here. With or without a sign, residents should not ever be afraid to exercise boundaries with solicitors by refusing to answer their door or by politely stating "no thank you" or "not interested" and shutting and locking the door.

The solicitor that came to my home was pushy and rude. Is there something the Village can do?
The Village of Mundelein does not directly regulate demeanor or style of individual sales, employees or solicitors. Do keep in mind that, as a homeowner or occupant, you may ask a solicitor to leave your property at any time and if they refuse, assistance from the Police Department is available to you. Every resident has the right to feel secure in their own home and should you ever feel threatened or unsafe based upon the behavior of a solicitor or peddler, please contact the Police immediately. Further, citizens who feel they have been the victim of unlawful solicitation or believe a solicitor is violating the law are urged to contact the police immediately so that officers may locate the individuals involved and investigate.

When is it appropriate to call the police regarding solicitors in my area?
Residents should contact the Police Department if they have any concerns about solicitation in their neighborhood. If the solicitor: (1) does not have proper Village Approved Solicitor Identification, (2) does have a valid Village Solicitor ID but is misrepresenting themselves (i.e. stating they are working with or from the Village), (3) ignore a posted “No Solicitation” sign, and/or (4) have been asked to leave but refused, please contact the Mundelein Police Department at 847-968-4600 immediately. If you feel that you are unsafe or in danger, please call 911.

What about energy providers and alternate residential energy supplier solicitors?
Residents should specifically be aware of door-to-door energy supplier sales and solicitations. The Village of Mundelein does not send people door-to-door to register for the supply of alternate energy. The Village encourages residents who wish to sign up with their own energy provider to initiate first contact with the provider after comparing all rates and options.
